Preview and review

One strategy in the contemporaneous use of languages in a classroom is to give the preview in one language and then a fuller review in the other language. For example, a topic is introduced in Welsh to provide an initial understanding. Then, the topic is considered in more depth in English. This may be reversed.

Purposeful concurrent usage

Rodolfo Jacobson (1990) suggested a purposeful concurrent use of two languages. Equal amounts of time are allocated to two languages,

and teachers consciously and strategically move from one language to another. There are discrete language episodes with distinct goals for each language with a planned change from one language to another. Jacobson (1990) proposed this strategy to strengthen and develop both languages, and to reinforce taught concepts by children processing them in both languages. A use of both languages, he suggested, contributes to a deeper understanding of the topic being studied.
